According to the Icelandic Tourist Board, 81,000 Icelanders travelled abroad in April—an 80% increase compared to the same month last year. This jump is largely attributed to Easter, the most popular travel holiday for Icelanders, falling in April this year instead of March as it did last year.
Departures of foreign visitors from KEF totalled 146,000 in April, representing a 6.5% increase from the previous year. The largest groups of departing foreign travellers were Americans (22%), followed by British (14%), Chinese (6%), Germans (6%), and French (5%).
Passenger numbers are expected to continue rising in the coming months. According to the airport’s forecast, 5.6 million travellers are expected to pass through KEF during the summer season, from April to October.
