Strong Start to the Year Suggests a Busy 2025 Ahead

Keflavík Airport (KEF) welcomed a total of 1,510,109 guests during the first quarter of 2025 (January–March), setting the tone for an eventful year.

Pass­enger Num­bers Surpass Ex­pecta­tions

The total number of guests exceeded the airport’s forecast, which had projected 1,505,928 travellers for the first quarter. The actual count was 4,181 higher than expected—a modest but positive increase of 0.3%.

Slig­ht Decline in Conn­ect­ing Pass­eng­ers

Of the total guests count, 1,136,569 were arriving or departing travellers, slightly above the forecast of 1,130,787—a 0.5% increase (5,782 more guests).

However, the number of connecting passengers fell short of projections. While the forecast expected 375,141 transit passengers, the actual figure was 373,540, a decrease of 1,601 guests or 0.4%.

Ic­eland­ic De­partu­res Well Above For­ec­ast

Icelanders traveling abroad from KEF significantly exceeded expectations. The forecast had estimated 114,000 Icelandic departures, but the actual number according to the Icelandic Tourist Boards was over 152,000—a difference of more than 39,000 travellers, or 34.4% above the forecast.

Am­er­ic­ans Led Am­ong For­eign Visi­t­ors

The number of foreign visitors came in below expectations. The forecast projected over 453,000 international tourists, but the actual number was just under 416,000—37,000 fewer than expected, or 8.3% below the forecast.

Among foreign tourists, Americans formed the largest group with over 95,000 visitors, representing 22.9% of the total. British travellers followed closely with 80,000 visitors (19.2%), while Chinese tourists numbered 27,000 (6.5%), Germans 26,000 (6.3%), and French visitors 19,000 (4.6%).
